Levels of Care For Substance Abuse at New Leaf Recovery

Levels of care for substance abuse explain how intensive your treatment should be right now. It’s a matching process. We look at safety, symptoms, supports, and goals, then fit care to you, not the other way around. New Leaf rejects cookie-cutter rules; your plan is individualized and paced for stability.

How We Place You

Call anytime as our line is open 24/7. We verify benefits and complete a brief pre-assessment covering substance use, mental health, medical needs, and goals.

We use ASAM treatment levels/ASAM criteria to match you to the right level of care—IOP, Virtual IOP, or Detox Placement when withdrawal management is needed. [2] It’s a clear framework, applied in a personal way.

If a higher level of care, such as medically managed intensive inpatient/detoxification, is safer, we coordinate a direct referral and stay involved. With your consent, we invite a loved one to be involved in the process and provide simple case management and follow-up to ensure a smooth handoff and return to IOP.

What to Expect

In our programs, you’ll be in small groups, capped at 10. Choose morning from 9–12 or evening from 6–9, for three hours a day. You’ll have weekly one-to-one sessions with a psychiatric advanced practice nurse (APN), with support as needed, led by licensed clinicians. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is offered only within IOP (not a standalone clinic).

Core services include therapist-led group therapy, individual therapy, relapse prevention training, life skills, and integrated, evidence-based outpatient services within one coordinated treatment program. [3]

Therapies Inside Your Plan

We pace trauma work. EMDR begins when skills and stability are in place.
Your care may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR, and Family Therapy, as well as simple tools for managing cravings, establishing routines, improving sleep, and enhancing mood. We incorporate group therapy and weekly one-on-one work, allowing you to practice skills in real-time. Our healthcare providers adjust the mix as you stabilize.

We build a personalized treatment plan that targets the drivers of your substance use disorder (SUD), like unhelpful thoughts, triggers, stress, and disconnection. You’ll develop concrete recovery skills, including craving management, safer scheduling, emotional regulation, and effective communication.

Everything ties back to daily life and your goals. These services are coordinated under a single program, ensuring that your treatment providers are aligned and on the same page.

Adults with SUD and co-occurring needs. We support people with alcohol or drug patterns, including opioid use disorder and co-occurring disorders like anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, and ADHD. [4] If you have medical or safety concerns, we’ll help you start with detox first and then step into IOP when you’re ready.

Busy schedules and real responsibilities. Our levels of care are designed for individuals balancing work, school, or family responsibilities. Choose morning or evening groups, or join virtually. Bring a support system (a trusted loved one, with consent) into parts of care when it helps. We keep the path flexible, structured, and doable.

Right-time steps. When withdrawal symptoms or safety are a concern, we start with Detox Placement and a personal warm handoff to a trusted partner. After medical stabilization, you transition into IOP or Virtual IOP for therapy, skills development, and structure. As you progress, we help you step down to aftercare and community supports. At each stage, we check in, review goals, and ensure your level of care continues to meet your current needs.

Support beyond sessions. Care doesn’t stop when the group ends. We coordinate with community support groups and peer support, schedule regular progress checks, and adjust your plan across the continuum of care. You’ll always know the next step and how to keep momentum between sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Levels of Care For Substance Abuse

What are the ASAM treatment levels, and how do they guide my care?

They’re a national framework from the American Society of Addiction Medicine that helps us match you to the right level of addiction care. [5] We assess your safety, symptoms, supports, and goals, and then place you in the best setting, whether that’s IOP, Virtual IOP, or a Detox Placement, initially for withdrawal management. It keeps decisions clear and consistent while your plan stays personal and flexible across the continuum of care.

What’s the difference between IOP and Virtual IOP?

The program is the same—same schedule (9–12 AM or 6–9 PM), same licensed clinicians, same group and curriculum. Virtual IOP lets you join live by secure telehealth that streams into the in-person room, so you’re part of the exact community even from home. It’s a good fit if you’re balancing work or family, have transportation limits, or want more privacy without losing real outpatient services or support.

How does Detox Placement work?

If it is determined that detox is the best fit for your needs, we coordinate a direct referral to a trusted partner for detoxification/inpatient services with round-the-clock care. We stay connected during that step, verify benefits, and plan your smooth return to IOP or Virtual IOP when you’re stable. You’ll know what to expect, and our team will help with simple case management and follow-up so nothing falls through the cracks.

What therapies are included in IOP?

Your core services include therapist-led group therapy, weekly individual therapy, and psychiatric APN support as needed. We use evidence-based modalities like CBT, DBT, EMDR (when you have the skills and stability), and Family Therapy, plus relapse prevention training and life-skills practice. [6] MAT is available only for clients enrolled in IOP, so medication and therapy move together in one coordinated treatment program. Groups are small (capped at 10) for safety, depth, and real practice.
